History of cheer up the lonely day.

National Cheer Up the Lonely Day hopes to spread awareness about the adverse and long-term effects of loneliness. It is celebrated on July 11th across the United States. Other countries have also started to observe the day in their own way. On this day, people are expected to take some time out of their busy schedules to bring happiness to those who are lonely or feel neglected.

How can I celebrate?

Celebrating Cheer Up the Lonely Day is easy. All you need to do is find somebody who needs a friend and provide one! It’s a great chance to get to know a new person and genuinely improve their life. This may also apply to your own friends and family, perhaps someone has been feeling particularly lonely recently, or going through some hardships resulting in them feeling isolated. Reach out and ask if they need anything, this will make them feel supported and that they aren’t alone.

Loneliness is very common with the elderly, according to Age UK, more than 2 million people in England over the age of 75 live alone, and more than a million older people say they go for over a month without speaking to a friend, neighbour or family member.

Some research suggests that loneliness is associated with an increased risk of certain mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, sleep problems and increased stress.

Loneliness can affect everyone of all ages, below we have provided some useful links for those who are suffering or know someone who is suffering with loneliness.
